Book vs. Movie Depictions

According to the Masterpiece version of Great Expectations (by PBS) this is what some of the characters currently look like:

Pip (young)

Mrs. Joe Gargery
Joe Gargery

For images of Miss Havisham and Estella, see the post: "Pompous Little Brat and Creepy Spinster"

What are your opinions on the characters' depictions in the movie? Do you think they look like this? If you have some thoughts, leave them in the comments section.

P.S. For your viewing enjoyment, here is what Pip is supposed to look like when he grows up :)
Pip (older)
Anyone want to see the movie after we finish the book? :)

  1. I can't put my finger on it, but the boy who plays young Pip reminds me of someone. Anyways, the actors they chose to play each part are not anything like I imagined. Except Pip. For his sister, I was picturing a very skinny, lanky, and tall woman. With dark hair that was stringy. I think I saw this in my head because I don't like her character, so I was imaging someone who wasn't appealing to the eyes, either. For some reason, I was imaging Joe to look like Ryan Gosling. It's probably because, let's face it, Gosling is attractive and it's fun picturing him in your head.

    1. I think Pip kind of reminds me of Freddie Highmore, the boy who is in August Rush and Finding Neverland. Like you said, I looks kind of like this (maybe a little less ragged). I also think Mrs. Joe looks too jovial. I got the same image about her hair, although I think that's just because that's the way they described it in the book. Her face is too round, and happy in the movie version. About her being unappealing- it's not just because she's the worst person in the world but also because I think Dickens' described her in the way we are picturing Mrs. Joe.

Joe looks really strange for me. I wasn't picturing Ryan Gosling (sadly) but I think he looks... well, really weird.

  2. Wow, I pictured his sister and Joe much younger. I thought Mrs.Joe to have dark wavy hair and a long face. In my mind joe was more handsome. He almost looks like Pip as an older man. Probably because I like how he treats Pip. My image of pip as a young boy is very similair to that. Maybe not as preteen looking, more like 8.

    1. I think Joe especially looks super weird. I definitely agree about the long face for Mrs. Joe. I want to picture her with unclean hair, but sadly, she is too meticulous for the image I have conjured in my head.

Joe was definitely more... something in my head. I got that "young shepherd" idea into my head, with golden hair and blue eyes, that sort of picture. Here he kind of looks creepy.

  3. These images are way different than what I pictured! I also thought that the Gargary's would be way younger. And the sister look way too much like Mrs. Weasley (and I like Mrs. Weasley WAY better than the sister). I also didn't think Joe would look anything like that. I thought he would look more childish. I guess it's interesting then that I think that older Pip looks too young. He only looks like teenagerish, not like an adult. Definitely interesting!
