Is it bad that I don't feel sorry for her?
Okay, is it horrible that I honestly don't feel sorry for Mrs. Joe at all? She is mean and nasty and I am not a fan. I don't feel sorry that she is brain damaged and beaten. I think she is a brutal person personality wise and it doesn't really bother me that she was brutally beaten. That's not true, I don't think it was right that she was beaten by a man, but I don't like her.

I know what you mean. I do feel bad for her, because brain damage would definitely suck, but I can't bring myself to be overly compassionate for her. It sounds harsh, but she sort of had it coming, the way she was carrying on. Still, I don't think she truly understands that her brother left, and I think it probably hurts her now (though it wouldn't have bothered her before the damage)
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who, when reading the parts right after she got brain damage, thought that Pip didn't even care that much? I mean, I know he cared and it hurt him a little, but if my sister, or granted anyone in my family, was beaten and ended up with brain damage I'd be pretty cut up about it. I kind of expected more emotion to come out of Pip, even though he doesn't like his sister very much.
ReplyDeleteA.Rush, I think it's because Pip is a total jerk right now. He is so insensitive and thinks only of his problems. So yes, he and his sis didn't really get along, but this is a whole new level of problems. From the time he meets Estella, he becomes self-conscious of his poverty, and this only escalates to affect his family members when he receives his expectations. I was looking at some of our old comments about how we felt such pity for Pip, when now he's definitely not one to pitied. Still, I think his personality is much more realistic than other Dickens' characters, and in that sense, I think Pip has much more depth than some of the other famous Dickens' characters.
ReplyDeleteI kind of think that Pip really does care deep down. Even though Mrs. Joe wasn't kind to him I think that he has to feel something. I mean, even if it was a family member or friend that I hated I know I would still feel sad just based off of pure human emotion. It's kind of like the idea on the tears post. He is afraid if he cries, that his hard exterior will be washed away.
ReplyDeleteSam I totally understand how you feel! I was kind of shocked that something that traumatic happened to her, but it didn't really make me feel any different about her. With regards to Pip, I was a little surprised at how nonchalant he was about the whole thing. I understand not being as affected right off the bat, but you could obviously tell after a while that her entire personality had changed. She ended up becoming a nicer person, but Pip still wasn't all that torn up about it.
