Tears

"Heaven knows we need never be ashamed of our tears, for they are rain upon the blinding dust of earth, overlying our hard hearts."

I just really, really like this quote. Your thoughts?

  1. WOW that's a cool quote. I like the idea that tears wash away the protective shell we sometimes put around ourselves.

I was thinking that maybe we could all choose a quote we like in this book for our project, whether it's poetic or is important because of its candor. We could have our significant passages too, but we don't have to read them and explain them in great depth because that could take too long. Instead, we'll give the gist of those passages, and could maybe spark some discussions within the class about these quotes, since they don't just apply to the book. That way, we could engage the class and make the presentation shorter.

  2. Are you saying we don't choose quotes that directly relate to Great Expectations and only broad, more life-applicable quotes like the one in this post? Or, are you saying we should each choose a quote that is about the book itself and a quote like the one above?

I feel like those were really confusing sentences, sorry.

  3. So we have to have the significant passage, which we'll simply put into the ppt. But I think we should actually present a quote like this. For myself, I would probably do the one in "What is Love?"; it doesn't necessarily relate to life in general, but it expresses one of the great dilemmas in the story. If you chose this quote, you could explain how it relates to life in general. We don't have to present these quotes all at once, just put them some where in our presentation to spark up some convo.

For example, if I am characterizing Estella, I would include this quote to show the nature of her relationship with Pip. For you, since you are doing the author's style, you would put this quote somewhere there, and discuss how although his language can get sometimes too flowery, the concepts behind his words reach to our deepest core beings. Does that make sense?

  4. I think we each need a quote for a slide in our power point. But anyway, Amy I love this quote too. My favorite part is when it talks about washing away the dust. I think we get so wrapped up in things that we see everyday, that when we cry (whether from happiness or sadness) we see things differently for a change.

  5. I really like this quote as well. I think that it represents how those with hard hearts lose their ability to truly feel emotion. In this way, crying, or just showing emotion, can start to melt that shell that is around our hearts. Great find Amy!
