Who is this kid?

When Pip returns to the Havisham house, he encounters this kid that picks a fight with him.  I'm confused on why they were fighting.  Also, Pip is worried that Estella looks down on him, but why did she let him kiss her on the cheek?  Help clear up these grey areas please :)

  1. I'm also wondering who this kid is. I haven't read about him again (or I don't think I have). It's possible he was further described in a section that I found difficult to follow.

In a clearly hypothetical case of course, a person (let's call her Ruthie) might have skipped forward and towards the end, Ruthie might have read that the adult Pip reflects that Estella only let him kiss her once prior to a certain incident that the adult Pip is involved in. My point is that there relationship isn't any better. Perhaps Estella was impressed by the show Pip put up.

      (Sorry about any confusion!)

  2. It's Herbert! I actually read about him now in chapter 21. He and Pip meet again when Pip goes to London. He is the son of his new tutor and they take a liking to each other and become good friends. So yeah, that's who the kid is.

  3. I really like Herbert Pocket. Although he has been raised to behave in a gentleman-like fashion, I think he treats Pip as his equal and gives him subtle tips on London etiquette. Herbert realizes the snob that Estella is and is not blinded by her beauty, the way naive Pip is.

  4. I agree that Herbert is a great guy. I think that he's a really good role model for Pip, especially since Pip is at a really confusing point in his life. I also agree that Estella could have been impressed by Pip's fighting abilities. However, it could have just been another play at Pip's emotions. I still don't like how much Estella treats Pip's emotions like some game.
